"Om Bhur Bhuvaḥ Suvah
Tat-savitur Vareñyaṃ
Bhargo Devasya Dhīmahi
Dhiyo Yonaḥ Prachodayāt"

Gayatri Mantra


English Translation:

We meditate on the glory of the Creator;

Who has created the Universe;

Who is worthy of Worship;

Who is the embodiment of Knowledge and Light;

Who is the remover of all Sin and Ignorance;

General meaning of Gayatri Mantra: 

We meditate on one of the most loved Supreme Lord, the maker who shines through all spheres with the splendour of divine light (physical, mental and spiritual). May our intellect shine in this holy light. 


Word by word meaning: 

Om: The primeval sound; 
Bhur: the physical body/physical realm; 
Bhuvah: the life force/the mental realm 
Suvah: the soul/spiritual realm; 
Tat:  That (God); 
Savitur: the Sun, Creator (source of all life); 
Vareñyam: adore; 
Bhargo: effulgence (divine light); 
Devasya: supreme Lord; 
Dhīmahi: meditate; 
Dhiyo: the intellect; 
Yo: May this light; 
Nah: our; 
Prachodayāt: illumine/inspire.

What is the Gayatri Mantra?

The Gayatri is a universal Vedic prayer. It's addressed to the Immanent and Transcendent Divine, called "Savita," or "all these are born of".

Three aspects of the Gayatri –

1. Adoration

2. Meditation

3. Prayer.

First, the divine is revered, then the reverence is meditated on and then the Divine is called upon to reawaken and reinforce the intellect, which makes the human beings less discriminatory.

The Gayatri is regarded as the Vedas. Veda means knowledge, and this prayer encourages and enhances the faculty of knowledge. This Gayatri mantra implies the four main declarations contained in the four Vedas.

Tamasic: 8 pm and 4 am

Satva is the best time to chant the Gayatri Mantra. Hence, the Gayatri Mantra should be recited between 4 am and 8 am and 4 pm and 8 am.
